Energetiks Ambassador Tawhia McMath: A Journey of Passion & Growth
Energetiks Ambassador Tawhia McMath is a rising star in the dance world, bringing passion, resilience, and authenticity in every step he takes. As he embarks on an exciting new chapter at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), we sat down with him to learn more about his journey, inspirations, and aspirations.
The Beginning of Tawhia’s Dance Journey
Tawhia’s love for dance began at the age of 10 in New Zealand. After moving to Sydney and Melbourne, he trained at TDC The Dance Company under the direction of Lisa Anne Hammer for 3-4 years before graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS). Now, he’s preparing to take the next big step in his career at VCA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Music Theatre program.
Growth & Training at SCIMM
Tawhia joined SCIMM Dance Company’s Platforms Youth Company in 2023. His experience with SCIMM has been transformative, providing him with invaluable opportunities to refine his artistry.
Reflecting on his time at SCIMM, Tawhia highlights being a soloist and lead performer in their recent Platforms show SWEAT as a standout moment. Performing in the Victorian Dance Festival (VDF) pieces in 2023 and 2024 also created unforgettable memories.
Under the mentorship of Scott and Tim, Tawhia has not only developed his unique dance style but also found a space where he feels truly seen. As a queer male dancer, he deeply values their guidance in navigating the dance industry, which can often feel rigid in its expectations. “Scott and Tim provided the safest space for me to express myself and to be truly comfortable in myself as I begin to grow up in my personal and dance journey.”
Career Highlights
Tawhia’s achievements extend beyond SCIMM. Some of his most notable milestones include:
Graduating as part of the VCASS Class of 2024.
Becoming the youngest choreographer for the 2024 Victorian Dance Festival’s IGNITE show.
Serving as the past resident director of PAC’s production FOUND|HOME.
Performing at Rod Laver Arena for the Australian Open in January this year.

Acknowledging Mentors & Inspirations
Tawhia expresses deep gratitude to the queer and POC artists who have mentored and danced alongside him throughout his journey, profoundly shaping both his dance and personal growth. He reflects, “They’re a huge part of it and have had the greatest impact on me as a dancer and person.”
Some of these incredible individuals include Loredo Malcolm, SCIMM, Stefan Lagoulis, Ross Hannaford, and Michael Corbett.
Tawhia’s Dance Philosophy & Aspirations
For Tawhia, jazz is the dance style that resonates most—his first love and favourite by far. Dance has taught him invaluable life lessons: resilience, the courage to speak up, the power of consistency, humility, and the importance of authenticity.
Looking ahead, his ambitions are bold and inspiring—owning his own dance company, becoming the first person of Māori descent to win a Tony Award, choreographing his own shows, performing on the West End, and dancing for artists like Troye Sivan or Tate McRae. The future is bright, and Tawhia is just getting started.

Advice for Aspiring Dancers
Tawhia leaves us with some heartfelt advice: “Always remember that your journey is completely different from the person next to you. Try your best not to compare yourself to others, or it’ll eat you up. And most importantly, always be your true, authentic self.”
With a strong mindset and unwavering dedication, Tawhia McMath is undoubtedly a dancer to watch. We can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next! Follow his journey on Instagram: @tawhiamcmath_
